Acupuncture

Acupuncture, one of the oldest known systems of healing in the world, has been used for thousands of years in China.  More and more people are being treated using acupuncture than many other medical systems in the world.

Treatment is generally painless; there may be a slight prick as the needle is inserted, with no further discomfort.  Sensations of warmth, tingling, or a sense of movement, or simply awareness of the needle can occur.  Acupuncture is simple, safe, and effective.

Pain is one of the most common reasons that patients seek out acupuncture treatment.  Whether it’s from lack of movement, over movement, injury, illness or accident, acupuncture can help to relieve pain in the body.

With the insertion of very fine and sterile needles, endorphins, the body’s natural pain-killing feel good chemicals are released.  In addition, acupuncture can cause other multiple biological responses in the body.  Responses can happen locally or distally, leading to activation of pathways among neurons and structures within the central nervous system, affecting physiological systems in the body.  There is evidence to support that opioid peptides release during acupuncture, which provide analgesic effects.  Acupuncture can also stimulate the glands, providing many systemic effects.  The regulation of blood flow stimulated by the needles can help with pain symptoms.  Also, immune system functions can be stimulated by acupuncture.

Trigger point acupuncture also helps release muscles at the trigger point site to bring fresh blood to the area.

Although pain is one of the most common reasons why a patient may seek acupuncture treatment, many are pleasantly surprised to learn that other health concerns can be addressed in the treatments as well, such as digestive issues, circulation, sleep issues, men’s and women’s health, overall wellness, etc. Acupuncture can treat many ailments; it is a whole body treatment while always focusing firstly on your main complaint.  If you have questions about what else we can treat, please contact us.

We aim to put the body in a balanced state where it will heal itself.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET TREATMENTS?

The number of treatments depends on the individual’s specific issue and whether it’s acute or chronic.  With the broad range of pain issues and causes, the number of treatments is best evaluated during the first diagnosis and treatment.  If the issue is best treated by a different kind of specialist, this will also be recommended during the first treatment.

Treatment may include additional modalities based on the issue: cupping, electrical stimulation, gua sha.  Certain exercises or stretches and/or dietary analysis may be recommended depending on your condition and goals.
